Its name comes from the state of which it is a native. The Maine Coon breed is the only native of the United States, more specifically, as we have mentioned, of the state of Maine. The breed was discovered for the first time in 1861, although it wasn't accepted until 1953.
Physical Traits
The Maine Coon has thick, short fur on its front legs and longer fur on its stomach and hind legs. The necklace of hair it has is also very characteristic. It is a strong and muscular cat with a wide chest. The males are bigger than the females. They have long tails, wide and the base and thinning to the tip. The Maine Coon reaches 14 kg in weight.
It has big eyes that can have different tones. They can be green, gold, blue or even one color in each eye. Its wide head, though not very large, ends with large ears, wide at the base and pointed.
Character
It is a cat that loves water. In fact, it will splash in it and even drink water with its paw. It is also a very curious and observant cat.
