An adult cat with a normal activity level only requires a maintenance diet.  This dietary need can be provided by a good commercial food that is complete and balanced.  Cats should eat individually, and as we have said, the amount of food depends on the level of activity, the body temperature and their metabolism.  Cats usually snack throughout the day, so they should have access to their food for several hours a day.

As we already said for kittens, adult cats require a high level of protein in their diet as well as the intake of Taurine.  Taurine is a fundamental amino acid for the nutrition of cats: its prolonged absence can cause changes in health such as retinal degeneration, reproductive disorders, nervous ailments, stunted growth, etc.  Vegetable products lack or contain small quantities of this amino acid: it is more present in meat products.

Foods that are formed with only one ingredient are not balanced, for example, a base of only chicken.  They must have a protein balance, which comes from different sources, like the beef, poultry, fish, liver and eggs.

Carbohydrates and grains like corn or rice should have a moderate presence in their diet, as the cat digests them with greater difficulty.  This explains the big error in feeding cats dog food, as this has a higher dose of starch.

The myth that the cat only needs to be fed with fish products is false.  It is just as counterproductive as feeding them only with a base of beef.  Remember that food should come from different sources.

Loss of appetite should not be a problem in cats unless it lasts for several days or the cat shows signs of illness.  If this happens, the cat should be examined by a veterinarian.
